Obtain decaying sounds through PWM

The topic on number crunching

Sorry, this could be a crosspost, but the topic is valid both for audio/video and microcontroller forums, so I posted here too.
I hope that it will not be deleted

Im wondering about the possibility of obtain (a decent imitation of) decaying sound like carillons, bells, gongs etc. using only variable duty cycle square waves (aka PWM) from a MCU, avoiding use of external analog envelope control hardware, just a passive filter.
Maybe someone skilled on spectrum analysis can confirm this is feasible or not.
